CARING FOR GOD'S GOOD CREATION

A faithful response to the climate crisis

Home: Welcome

AN INVITATION TO CARE FOR GOD'S CREATION

My invitation is to connect your spirituality and faith to your environmental actions, fostering  inspiration grounded in gratitude, hope and love. Through my ministry, I can help guide you, your congregation and my fellow clergy on a journey toward transformative action as a response to climate change and environmental degradation.

MY JOURNEY TOWARD CARING

FOR GOD'S GOOD CREATION

I grew up in the Hudson River Valley. Even as I write this, I imagine the Hudson River with its gently sloping hills and meandering riverbed. The seasons are vibrant in the Valley from brightly colored red and orange leaves in the Fall, to the mint green buds in the Spring, the flourishing of the Summer growth to the starkness of the Winter snow against the barren trees.

In the midst of that creation  I experience a small separation between heaven and earth, a thin space where the presence of the Divine is palpable. I sense God in my soul when I am near the River.

As a child I went on a school day trip on the Hudson Clearwater Sloop, an educational experience led by environmental activist Pete Seeger. That day I learned that the River was so polluted that it was nearly dead. Memories of that short trip on the Sloop would stay with me, a stark reminder about the ability of humans to destroy the environment. And yet, when my children were young we swam in the clean waters of that same River, now restored by human commitment, a sign of hope and resurrection.

Following a wonderful 20 year career as an environmental planner and educator, I entered seminary seeking ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. As my faith journey continued I recognized a calling to share my love  and care for all God's creation. I want to share my faith that new life for this earth can happen even in the midst of climate uncertainty.

My vision for "Caring for God's Good Creation" came from this journey as I realized that others may be seeking to deepen their connection between spirituality and environmental action. I'd love to walk with you on that spiritual journey in caring for God's Good Creation. Please read on to see more about how we can travel together.

In God's peace,

The Reverend Stephanie M. Johnson
